Upcoming Meeting Details

Meeting Date: November 25, 2013

IEEE West Michigan Consultant's Network
Monday, November 25, 2013 Meeting Announcement

Greetings everyone!

Our next meeting is about a week and a half away, on Monday, November 25 (the Monday before Thanksgiving). At this meeting we will focus on a technical topic - MAGNETICS! I'm excited to welcome Andrew Hirzel as our speaker. Andrew's background is permanent magnets and electromagnetics. Motor designs, solenoids, actuators, latches, MRI devices, variable reluctance devices are all in his resume somewhere. He consults in this area, having his own 2D/3D FEA package so he can provide detailed analysis (a package he has used for over 20 years; it is Maxwell, now owned by Ansys).

Andrew will hit on the following fascinating topics:
-what exactly goes on during hysteresis? (both soft iron and permanent magnet)
-what's a magnet domain?
-what are the major aspects of soft magnetic material (iron)?
-what are all the types of permanent magnets, when are these useful relative to each other?
-is an MMF sort of equivalent to an EMF?
-what are those goofy units we use in the magnet world and why?
-how does a permanent magnet get destroyed?
-If one permanent magnet can magnetize many small magnets, for over 40 years, why won't the original permanent magnet get weaker? Where does the energy to order the domains in the small magnets come from? (a guy who made compasses for years asked me this)

Andrew attended our previous meeting where we all found him very engaging and interesting! I hope you can join us for this fascinating topic!

The format of the evening will be as follows:
6:00pm - Dinner at Seoul Garden (3321 28th St SE, in front of Woodland Mall)
7:30pm - Meeting at DornerWorks - www.DornerWorks.com (NW corner of Lake Eastbrook Blvd & Camelot)

Please respond to this email with an RSVP is you would like to attend. But feel free to show up last minute too.

Thanks,
David...
IEEE WMCN Chair
